Location: Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Client: NGO “Heart for the children suffering from cancer in the Federation of BiH”
Size: 666 m2
Scope: Walter wanted its share of good deeds together with “NORMAL arhitektura” and offered to bimify the project, to be a BIM Consultant and do a BIM model development of the existing building. At the same time BIMobject contacted Walter in need for a demonstrative example project for their BIMsupply platform, which would use mostly products from BIMobject.com.
An idea was born, and the Parents’ Home became a showcase for BIMsupply, becoming known to an even wider audience. BIM is all about structured, accurate, reliable and accessible product information. The Management of the building in future will now be so much easier and more productive. We take pride in being a part of this wonderful story!
About the Project:
The Parents’ Home was designed to provide accommodation and support for children who are struggling with cancer and their families who come outside of the capital city Sarajevo. The association “Heart for the children suffering from cancer in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina” started with the project of Parents’ Home back in 2011 when the preliminary design of the Parents’ Home was presented on the event of marking the International Childhood Cancer Day. After watching a coverage of this event on the news, the Sarajevo-based architectural studio “NORMAL arhitektura” got in touch with the NGO “Heart for the children suffering from cancer in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina” and offered themselves to do the entire project on a pro bono basis.
After many obstacles, the Association managed to resolve the administrative obligations and the construction of the building started in March 2014. The Home was built with the help of friends of children that are suffering from cancer. Thanks to the various donors who recognized the importance of this project, Bosnia and Herzegovina now has its first Parents’ Home, which represents the permanent good that will be used by children with cancer and their parents, medical staff as well as the wider community.
Parents’ Home for children suffering from cancer has 757 m2, in those included: a basement, a ground floor and three floors with all together 10 apartments, multi-functional room with a playground and a living room, a shared kitchen and dining room, multi-functional hall and rooms for the Association. The building itself has a class A energy efficiency rating. The Parents’ Home is the crossing of the opposites: compact yet disperse, white yet colourful, small yet grandiose, it became an iconic city building.
The design of the building allows the ten apartments, which are distributed on three levels, to have a public space for gathering, cooking, and eating on the ground floor, and a space for fitness, conferences, workshops and other activities in the basement. Each of the 10 apartments’ interior designs was trusted to a different architect/architectural studio and like everything else on this project from the very beginning until the end, was done pro bono. This five-level building is built entirely from the donations that parents and architects have collected with the desire to turn this dream into reality.
The University Clinic of Sarajevo provided the land for the building, architects and engineers worked pro bono, not to forget the many volunteers and people of good will who donated their time to assist, as it is also thanks to them that the Parents’ Home is as beautiful as it is today.
